Phoenix Scientific Industries Ltd (PSI) is an established leader in the design and manufacture of bespoke advance process plant equipment used in the scientific advanced material development industries worldwide. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a mechanical engineer to join our team within the system builds facility. 

Job Specification

This role would be suited to a keen enthusiastic individual that is looking for an opportunity in a multi-disciplined, engineering systems build environment. The ideal candidate will typically be from a mechanical or maintenance engineering background.

Duties to include, but not limited to:

  • Working with their own skills and initiative using engineering techniques and procedures together with recognition and awareness of current HSE safe working Regulations
  • Ideally from engineering – maintenance background with a strong mechanical bias with some understanding of vacuum, water cooling pipework, pneumatic and hydraulic systems within both sub-assemblies and large assembly builds would be an advantage
  • General erection and disassembly of process plant equipment
  • Assist with sub system bench build and equipment tests, including configuration and calibration
  • Experienced in setting and using manual lathe and milling machines
  • Part of a small team working within a safe modern working environment
  • Training given within specific specialist areas if required
  • Good long-term future employment package prospects which include opportunities for ‘fast track’ progression for the right individual within this expanding UK privately owned company
  • Must be willing and able to travel overseas being part of an installation team

Salary: IRO – £30,000 PA depending on experience
Location:Hailsham, East Sussex
Desirable:Full UK Driving Licence / Counterbalance forklift truck licence (Pref)
Working Hours:08:00 to 17:00  – Monday to Thursday, 08:00 – 12:30 Friday
38.5 hours per week – 1/2 hour lunch break – 12.30 – 13.00
Annual Profit Sharing Scheme:January to December – Pro-rata membership in Year-1, Full Membership thereafter.
Holiday entitlement:Year-1 = 20 days / Year-2 = 22 days / Year-3 = 25 days   (exc. Bank holidays);

In order to meet the company’s planned growth with an increasing workload of Research and Development projects together with large system orders for new process equipment contracts we are now looking for a full time experienced skilled Project / Planning engineer to oversee the planning and timely execution of large project phases with a particular emphasis on time management, delivery and associated budgetary cost controls.

PSI has a strong background in investing in both internal as well as externally funded R&D programs. The successful applicant will play a key role in our culture of collaboration and creativity, bringing new ideas and ways of working that drive innovation.

Required Key Skills

The successful applicant will be part of the Company Senior Management team and will:

  • Understand, agree, and develop engineering project objectives by studying design requirements, specification documents and technical engineering drawings
  • Ideally have experience or understanding of mechanical, vacuum, and electrical systems used in large, specialised processing equipment assemblies
  • Apply and represent the company’s true interests and objectives
  • Work within the engineering team managing own workload of multiple large systems projects with integrity and diligence. This will include working in coordination with UKI Government R&D programmes involving external partners
  • Provide and apply accurate, results-orientated professional project management skills
  • Understanding and organising anticipated labour requirements on a project
  • Carrying out, evaluate and understand risk on project plans
  • Ensure  all the aims of the project are met
  • Making sure the quality standards are met
  • Monitoring internal work instructions and  sub-contractors to ensure directives and guidelines are maintained
  • Understanding of budgets and costings within an engineering based environment
  • Reporting to the company directors, management team and funding partners on progress by means of attending review meetings and presentations
  • Evaluating the success of the project against its benchmarking and sharing lessons or best practice with other team members
  • Apply high levels of communication skills within company using MS Project planning software and other project management tools
  • Supporting Sales team with engineering problem solving which includes technical dialogue post system sales

Professional Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree in a relevant Engineering subject  
  • Project and planning management background with a minimum of 3 years’ experience within a systems engineering business environment
