Phoenix Scientific Industries Ltd (PSI) designs, manufactures and installs capital equipment for the Advanced Materials industry, ranging from small R&D systems for universities and institutions, through to large scale industrial production units for corporate enterprises across the globe.

Although our product and technology range span many aspects of the industrial metallurgy sector, we are best known for the design of gas atomisation technology, essential to produce high performance metal powders.

Design technologies typically include gas atomisation, induction heating, fluid Physics, chemical vapour deposition, fluidised beds physical vapour deposition, wire casting, melt spinning, thermal vacuum and pressure systems.

Phoenix Scientific Industries (PSI) ltd supply specialist equipment designed and manufactured in-house for the Advanced Materials industry with products and technologies that span many aspects of the Industrial Metallurgy sector.

Our technology is sold throughout the world and offers customers a research or production scale machine to process feedstock material into a refined, alloyed, highly valuable metal powder product for Additive Manufacturing and HIP casting. We offer equipment to post-process these powders in fluidised beds with various reactions to improve their quality or apply a conformal material coating.

This role offers the successful candidate the opportunity for continual professional development, working with the latest tools and technology, with occasional international travel, and stimulating applications research work in several key industry areas within a growing global market.

Job Specification & Qualifications

  • Qualification in a relevant subject –Engineering, Material Science or Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering or Physical Chemistry.
  • Job role reportable to Research and Technology Director. Will be a team member of PSI Research and Technology department delivering projects, spanning both Internal, Government and Corporate funded contracts.
  • Must be seeking a long-term role in a growing Commercial / R&D environment.
  • Includes a mixture of office and “hands on” workshop / laboratory assignments.
  • May represent PSI during conferences, video meetings and overseas exhibitions.
  • The Sr R&D Engineer will build a fundamental understanding of novel engineering processes and materials. This knowledge will be applied during the design, building, installation and testing of new equipment working closely with PSI design and production personnel. Material / Process data will be compiled and critically analysed to ensure optimum performance and cost benefit. Process models will be generated and the Sr R&D Engineer is expected to become a subject matter expert on emerging technology areas.
  • May be required at times to provide support to other business functions (design, sales and purchasing) on specialist subjects.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills to facilitate close working relationships with customers, suppliers, subcontractors, funding bodies, consortium partners and PSI personnel.
  • Demonstrable ability to work consistently under times of pressure. Must be comfortable with handling uncertainty inherent in R&D activity and flexible when work tasks change or develop rapidly.
  • A self-motivated personality, with the drive to achieve excellence in all activities undertaken.

Engineering Production Operative – Systems

This is a unique opportunity to work and learn new skills in an exciting, growing industry. Metal powders are used in many applications including 3D metal printing, and the demand is growing year on year.

For this reason, we are looking for an Engineering Production Operative to join our growing Team of three. 

Job overview: The Production Operative is part of the team responsible for manufacturing gas atomisers and other System products. Each build typically covers a nine-month period.  

Main responsibilities and duties

  • Working with the Production Manager and Production Supervisor to fulfil production orders for Atomising Systems
  • Assisting in the kitting of parts in line with the modular build schedule
  • Assisting in the assembly of individual parts and modules of the System
  • Work on a lathe and milling machine as required.
  • Carrying out Planned Maintenance
  • Maintaining a clean, organised workspace and promote safe practices.

Required knowledge and skills

  • Experience within engineering /manufacturing operating environment
  • Pro-active mind-set with the ability to work autonomously where required

Desired (optional) experience

  • Fork-lift (Counterbalance) licence

We’re in search of a dedicated and technically astute Sales Support & Marketing Co-Ordinator to join our team. If you have a solid engineering background, skilled at gaining key market insights, and a passion for driving sales, we want to hear from you.

Main responsibilities and duties

  • Market Research: Conduct thorough market research to comprehend customer needs, industry trends, and technological advancements. Analyse competitor activities to provide actionable insights to the sales team.
  • Promotional Material and Presentations: Update technical documentation, brochures, websites and create presentations to effectively showcase our engineering solutions. Collaborate with the sales team to translate technical features into compelling selling points that are accurate and relevant.
  • Exhibition Organisation: Plan and coordinate engineering-focused exhibitions and events to ensure productive events.
  • Sales Development: Assist in the qualification of potential customers by understanding their engineering requirements. Collaborate seamlessly with the sales team to develop targeted approaches for clientele, markets and applications.
  • Further technical collaboration: Whilst sales will be the primary focus, some development of research and material development may be expected for other business functions such as R&D and powder production.
  • Possibility of representation of PSI during conferences, business meetings and exhibitions.

Qualifications/skills that would be an advantage for a candidate:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Any relevant marketing or business qualifications
  • Familiarity with capital equipment sales
  • Experience in relation to technical sales or marketing (marketing of engineering related products is preferred)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software
  • Experience with drawing software such as Corel Draw or AutoCAD
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to thrive in a collaborative environment.
  • Strong analytical abilities to understand market data, competitor activities and customer requirements.
