ULTRASPIN Melt Spinner
ULTRASPIN: High performance laboratory-scale melt spinning systems designed to produce amorphous and microcrystalline metallic ribbons under varying atmospheric conditions.
The ULTRASPIN is operated under vacuum, inert gas (at variable pressure) and air dependent upon atmosphere-spun material compatibility. Vacuum facilities for either rough or high vacuum enable inert gas to be backfilled to a set pressure for a static atmosphere or a flowing one by balancing the gas input with vacuum pumping rate.
Metal is melted in an inductively-heated 3kg crucible, which is easily removable for changing composition. A smaller capacity version is available for reduced metal quantities for preliminary experiments with new compositions. A ceramic valve seated in a precision ground orifice retains the metal in the crucible until spinning commences when a top pressure of inert gas is introduced over the melt is applied as the valve is simultaneously lifted by pneumatics. Metal is then passes to the nozzle piece and is forced through a port of variable dimensions to the rotating wheel.
The position of the nozzle in relation to the top of the wheel is variable in the three orthogonal axes with the vertical movement being adjustable to high resolution.
The wheel is capable of rotation in both directions at infinitely variable speeds up to 3000 r.p.m. Selectable rotation directions allow spun product to be directed via guides from the wheel at different angular positions from the nozzle and directed down the collection chute.
A gas knife/ deflector blade is fitted to the chute to cause separation of the spun product and its direction towards the detachable collection bin. The deflector blade and gas knife can be fixed at variable angular positions and angle of attack.
Two guides are supplied for the two directions of rotation and the appropriate one is fitted to the chute with the gas knife assembly occupying the vacant fixing point on the opposite side of the chute.
